Your dog is your best friend!
So, naturally, you want the best for your dog: the best foods, treats, and medical care. But there are SO many choices available that it's really hard to make the right decision--especially if you're an FTCP (first-time canine parent)!
Buster and his 'mom' (me) can help you sift through all the information that's out there.
We've got first-hand experience in feeding holistic foods and treats, and information on what NOT to feed your CBF (canine best friend).
We've 'test-driven' some of the most popular toys and accessories, so we know what 'canine kids' prefer--and what toys aren't worth the time.
We'll also give you tips on holistic vet care, nutritional supplements, games and exercise, grooming, safety tips, pet-friendly vacation ideas--everything you'll need to enjoy life with your furry pal.
Happy Canine Valentine's Day!!
Who loves ya, baby? Why, your CBF, of course! Think about it: dogs give so much, but ask for so little. A dog's emotional development is similar to a human four-year-old, so he's permanently at the level where he thinks you're the greatest thing since beef jerky. Dogs don't ask for money, they don't want to borrow your car, they don't talk back (unless yours happens to be a Husky or a Malamute), they don't wear weird clothes, they don't want tattoos or piercings, they don't experiment with drugs or alcohol...the list goes on. What do they want in return? A full belly, a roof over their heads, a warm place to sleep, and some love and attention. What else do they offer? Unconditional love. Reward his devotion and loyalty with a little extra attention--and maybe a special treat or a new toy. The Flashing Dog Safe-T-Tag Heart isn't a treat OR a toy, but is a great idea to help keep your pet safe. Does your CBF mow through chew toys like they're made of paper? The Nylabone Rhino Bone Flexible Chew Toy for Dogs will give your pup lots of chewing pleasure without wearing out. Want to bake some of your love into a sweet treat for your pup? Try Claudias Canine Cuisine Canine Cake Mix . Your CBF can have his cake and eat it too!
A word of caution: If you're the lucky recipient of a Valentine box of candy, PLEASE keep it out of reach of your dog. Chocolate (especially the darker varieties), macadamia nuts, and some sweeteners such as xylitol are very dangerous for pets.
Cosmo's Corner
I WANT SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Winter is my favorite season. I have a lot of thick fur, so I'm much more comfy in cold weather--and rolling and tunneling in snow is a blast. But here it is, mid-January, and we've had hardly any of the white stuff. It's disappointing me to the point that I've been digging in my mom's daylily bed. (Actually, there's a critter that's been hanging around there, so I'm just following my nose.) Since the ground isn't totally frozen yet, and we've had rain (NOT snow--grrr), I've tracked in a whole bunch of mud onto the kitchen floor. My mom is NOT amused. I REALLY need snow. :)
Until next time, this is Cosmo the Golden Retriever signing off...
Looking for a way to keep your CBF entertained when it's too icky to play outside? Try the Nina Ottosson Dog Spinny Interactive Dog Toy . He'll love it! Just make sure you're not playing with this toy to the point where he's putting on weight from all the fun.
Even though it's winter, your pup still needs exercise. He won't mind the weather (probably a lot less than you do), unless he's got short fur or is a smaller guy. If this describes your guy, a sweater or coat makes a fashion statement and keeps him cozy. The Fido Fleece Coat Bones and Dots Size 28 - 31inches Long x 42inch Girth is super-cute, warm, durable, and easy to put on a wiggly pup.
Detroit Dog Rescue Needs Your Help
Detroit Dog Rescue, a charity founded in February 2011 by Emmy-nominated producer Monica Martino and local rapper Hush, is dedicated to helping the 50,000+ stray dogs roaming the streets of Detroit. Currently, there are only about 23 animal-care workers employed by the city to deal with this enormous problem. There simply aren't enough resources to provide for these dogs, so unfortunately, at least 90% are euthanized after capture. Detroit Dog Rescue's mission is to draw attention to the plight of these animals and also to rescue and find homes for them when possible. This group currently does not have a shelter facility and must rely on foster homes for the dogs. Their goal is to raise money to create the first no-kill shelter in Detroit.
Detroit Dog Rescue is an all-volunteer non-profit 501(c)3 organization and your donations are tax-exempt. This wonderful group REALLY needs your help! Please visit their website at www.detroitdogrescue.com for more information.
